Earlier this week it was reported that Liverpool were in ‘pole position‘ to sign Chelsea target Enzo Fernandez.
It was reported in December that the Reds had triggered his £106 million release clause, something that was later discovered to be premature.
Chelsea then emerged on the scene and Sky Sports claimed he was badly wanted by Graham Potter in West London.
And it looks like the Blues have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Benfica have been left stunned by how much Chelsea have offered for the Liverpool-linked midfielder, who won a World Cup with Argentina 15 days ago.
And Jacobs added, in a separate tweet, that the Portuguese outfit feel that the offer is too bid to reject.
Here’s what he tweeted:
The Portuguese outfit look set to make a staggering profit on the player, in total.
According to TyC Sports, Benfica paid only £15.8 million earlier in 2022.
And although it remains to be seen what Chelsea are offering, it’s almost certainly more than Liverpool – and more than his release clause, which is already nine figures.
If you’re Benfica, you have to ask if he’ll ever be worth more money?
This is traditionally a selling club, as Jacobs also pointed out on Twitter, and it’s unlikely that they’ll get more money for him in the future.
Selling now makes sense, unfortunately for Liverpool.
