Speaking on The Red Agenda Podcast, James Pearce has been talking about Liverpool and Neco Williams’ future at the club.

The 20-year-old right-back looks like a bright young talent, but in order to make the grade at Liverpool, you simply have to be the best of the best.

Sadly, Williams isn’t quite at that level, and his gametime at Anfield has been limited as of late.

Understandably, there have been questions about his future, and Pearce says that the defender who was labelled as ‘outstanding’ by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave the club before Monday’s transfer deadline.

What’s been said about Williams?

Pearce shared what he knows about the Welshman’s situation.

“Neco Williams, I wouldn’t be massively surprised if there was some interest him before next week’s January deadline. Liverpool were open to selling him in the summer, there was talk of a £10m asking price, and there’s an understanding at Liverpool about Neco’s position – there’s a World Cup at the end of the year and he needs to be playing regular football. He’s good enough to be doing that, but at Liverpool he has the misfortune of being behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Also, Liverpool look at it and see Conor Bradley and the way he’s performed. He’s younger than Neco as well, and he’s more happy to bide his time and learn his trade, so I think that’s why Liverpool are open to offers, and I was told potentially a loan for the rest of this season with an option or an obligation for the summer for Neco Williams, so yeah, I think we probably will see him move on, if not this month then in the summer.”

Makes sense

As sad as it is to say, it does make sense if Liverpool want Williams to move on in the near future.

The Reds have had to let some incredibly talented academy products leave in recent years such as Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson, but there’s a fine line between being a quality player and being a Liverpool player.

Williams has the ability to carve out a fantastic career for himself in the Premier League, but to make it at Liverpool, you need to be truly elite.
