According to Ben Jacobs, Chelsea will make another attempt to sign Arsenal target Edson Alvarez in January.
What’s the story?
Well, there was deadline day drama involving the Mexico international after Chelsea submitted a £43m bid.
Alvarez skipped training with Ajax in an attempt to force through the move to Stamford Bridge, although Ajax held firm and refused to be bullied after losing Antony and Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United.
That gives Arsenal hope of landing the Ajax No.4 either in January or next summer, although Jacobs – who works for CBS Sports – claims Chelsea will definitely be making another move for him this winter.
It is also said that Alvarez has been directly informed that the Blues will be making another bid for his services, with the 24-year-old still keen on a move to west London.
It comes after the Mexican helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title last season with 41 appearances in all competitions, in which he scored five goals from a defensive midfield position.
Arsenal need to fend off Chelsea
In our view, Mikel Arteta and Edu – Director of Football at the Emirates Stadium – need to do their upmost to convince Alvarez to sign for them over Chelsea.
Arsenal are in desperate need of another midfielder, having lost Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey to injuries.
In truth, the midfield department needed strengthening even when the pair were fully fit.
If the Gunners are still sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League come January, it would put them in a fantastic position to change Alvarez’s mind and lure him to north London instead of west London.
Keep an eye on this situation in January, as we can’t see Alvarez staying at Ajax for much longer.
