Fabrizio Romano has said on the Chris Cowlin YouTube show that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are leading the race for Gabriel Jesus despite Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur showing interest in the Manchester City striker.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Arsenal have been leading the race for Jesus for a long time because of the Brazilian connection and Technical Director Edu.

Romano has added that although there is contact between Tottenham and the 25-year-old Brazil international, it is Arsenal who are ahead of Spurs in the race for the striker.

There has been speculation in the Italian media that Tottenham have made a bid for Jesus.

Arsenal lead race for Tottenham target Gabriel Jesus

Romano said on the Chris Cowlin YouTube show, as transcribed by TheBootRoom: “At the moment there is no bid but there is contracts between Gabriel Jesus and Tottenham.

“Let me say that Arsenal are leading the race for him for a long time because of the Brazilian connection and Edu Gaspar, who is working since a long time, so Arsenal are really interested in Gabriel.

“For Tottenham they are discussing with his agent. They’ve had conversations with his agent, so for the moment, it’s a possibility.

“But he wants to play, he wants to be a key player. This is why at the moment it’s important for Gabriel to understand ‘What is the plan?’”

Gunners or Spurs?

In our view, Gabriel Jesus is likely to prefer a move to Arsenal to a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Yes, Spurs will play in the Champions League next season, but they have one of the best strikers in the world in Harry Kane.

Son Heung-min has also established himself as an important source of goals for Spurs.

A move to Tottenham would see Jesus have the same issue that he has at City now – lack of regular playing time.

Now, at Arsenal things will be different.

Arsenal need to sign strikers, and Jesus would walk into Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup.
