Journalist: 22-year-old Spurs target who almost joined Everton in summer can now aim “higher”

On August 19th, it was said that Everton were on the verge of signing Mohammed Kudus from Ajax, a player who is also a target for Tottenham.

Unfortunately for Frank Lampard, Ajax blocked the Ghana international’s exit as Manchester United stepped up their pursuit of Antony, and he ended up staying in Amsterdam – despite missing training in a bid to force his move to Goodison Park.

Now, after a strong start to the campaign for Kudus, he may be out of reach for the Toffees.

What’s the story?

Well, that is according to journalist Mikos Gouka, who thinks the Ajax No.20 could probably aim “a bit higher” than Everton after shining against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Kudus scored a thumping equaliser at the Kop End before Joel Matip secured a 2-1 win late on, with the Ghanaian standing out on an evening where Steven Bergwijn and Dusan Tadic were quiet in attack.

Ajax Showtime quote Gouka as saying: “He has done well and then you know how it goes in Amsterdam. If it has to be paid, it will be paid soon. I do believe the price has gone up.

“If you show what you can do against Liverpool, that is worth so much more than a few games in the Eredivisie. Maybe now he can step in a bit higher than Everton.”

Kudus has scored six goals in nine appearances already this season, so perhaps Lampard has missed the boat.

As aforesaid, Tottenham are interested in the versatile forward – who can operate on the right or in the centre of attack – and the north Londoners are able to offer him Champions League football, something Everton cannot.

Unless the Toffees enjoy a remarkable campaign and get themselves close to European qualification, we can’t see Kudus stepping down from the Champions League to join them.

In our view, Antonio Conte and Lampard may regret missing out on the 22-year-old Ajax sensation.

The Dutch giants certainly know how to develop attacking talent, and if Kudus goes on to explode in Amsterdam this season, Tottenham and Everton may end up looking at a significant sum to pay.

Just look at Antony, who sealed a move worth £86m to Manchester United after a 2021/22 season in which he scored 12 goals in 33 appearances.

Kudus has already netted half of that tally in nine games this term, so Tottenham and Everton may have already missed their chance to sign him for a reasonable fee.
