Premier League sides, including Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, have been credited with interest in the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder.

Reported Everton and Tottenham Hotspur target Sean Clare may have played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Wednesday midfielder picked up an ankle injury in Saturday’s draw against Bolton Wanderers, which will keep him out for the rest of the season and potentially beyond, according to Owls manager Jos Luhukay.

Clare’s contract at Hillsborough expires in the meantime however, and Everton and Tottenham are among those hoping to sign him, according to reports last month.

“We had a shock moment yesterday with another player, Sean Clare, he will be for the rest of the season out,” Luhukay told Sheffield Wednesday’s official Facebook page. “Last Saturday he knocked his ankle and must see a specialist at the beginning of next week. Then they must decide whether he needs surgery, and discover how long he is out for. Now they can say that he is not playing any more this season.”

Asked for an update on Clare’s contract situation, the Dutchman said: “The contract is ready for Sean, I think for a couple of weeks he’s only had to sign it.

“For him, it’s a difficult situation, he can be three, four, five, six months maybe out of football and his contract is finished in the summer. But he can sign with us and we have shown him the future – what we would like to do with him.”

What next for the Wednesday midfielder?

It remains to be seen whether or not Clare’s injury will affect the interest allegedly being shown by Everton, Tottenham et al. Will either of those have the patience to wait for a player – who is already in his 22nd year and doesn’t have a lot of football behind him – to return to full health, let alone make the leap to Premier League football?

Staying at Sheffield Wednesday, who as Luhukay says have already shared their future plans for Clare, could therefore be the most sensible option, shot-term.

If he’s good enough, he’ll get to where he wants to be regardless.
