Tottenham Hotspur lacked any real kind of cutting edge against Manchester United on Saturday.

Former Manchester City player Joleon Lescott looks on during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Everton at Etihad Stadium on August 21, 2017 in Manchester, England.

Joleon Lescott was a guest on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily programme on Tuesday October 31st, and delivered his verdict on Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, sharing his surprise at Fernando Llorente’s omission.

Mauricio Pochettino opted to play Son Heung-min as a central striker, and as a result, Tottenham lacked any real direct threat through the middle, which subsequently made them rather easy to defend against.

Llorente, 32, joined the Lilywhites from Swansea City on transfer deadline day, for a fee believed to be in the region of £12 million, but is still waiting to register his first goal for the club, having made 10 appearances for Pochettino’s side thus far.

And Lescott shared his disbelief that the experienced Spaniard was not part of Spurs’ starting XI at Old Trafford, responding to a question asking him if he was surprised with Pochettino’s team selection, when speaking live on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily show:

“Yes I was surprised. He has played in big games all over Europe, and they needed that focal point up top.”

Tottenham fans will be hoping that Harry Kane returns to action sooner rather than later, with their side currently sitting eight points adrift of Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

If the 24-year-old is unavailable again, however, surely it will be time to give Llorente the starting berth that he deserves.
