Johnson Wagner has admitted that Jordan Spieth has been potentially the most disappointing player on the PGA Tour this season, insisting that he expected to see him win this year.

Spieth remains one of the biggest stars on the PGA Tour. He is certainly one of the most popular players with the fans, particularly as it is never boring when the 32-year-old is out on the course.

Who do you think will win the John Deere Classic?

There were hopes that Spieth would kick on this year. His 2025 season was spent making his way back to full sharpness after undergoing surgery on the wrist injury that had plagued him for several years.

Unfortunately, Spieth has only been able to show glimpses of his best form in 2026.

Remarkably, Spieth has not registered a single top 10 finish on the PGA Tour this year. He has finished 11th or 12th four times, while he was inside the top 20 at both The Masters and the PGA Championship.

And speaking on Scorecard on CBS Sports, Johnson Wagner picked Spieth out as the most disappointing player on tour this season.

“I hate to say it, but it’s Jordan Spieth. I think coming off of a year where he played okay with that wrist injury, coming off the wrist surgery, I was expecting a lot. I thought we’d see Jordan get in contention. I thought we’d see him win by now,” he said.

“I’m definitely disappointed, and I hate to say it, because I love him so much. But I’ve got to see some more out of you, Jordan. I don’t want to see you on the Challenger Tour in 2028.”

The PGA Tour may not be too disappointed if Jordan Spieth gets relegated

Wagner was clearly not being entirely serious by expressing a concern about Spieth dropping down into the Challenger Series after next season.

Spieth is currently 52nd in the FedEx Cup. So it is difficult to imagine that there is any chance of the Texan finishing outside the top 90 places that are likely to guarantee Championship Series status after 2027.

However, there must be a part of those working on the PGA Tour hoping that a player of Spieth’s calibre falls down into the second tier at some stage in the coming years.

It is extremely exciting for the PGA Tour to introduce promotion and relegation. But there are concerns about how popular the Challenger Series will be, particularly with more casual golf fans.

Rory McIlroy said the tournaments will be glorified Korn Ferry Tour events.

If Spieth ended up being relegated, fans would immediately take a much greater interest in the track two events.

Not only would they want to follow Spieth, but they would also get to know some of the other names on the Challenger Series that perhaps they had not previously heard of.

So it may only take a handful of big names being relegated for the Challenger Series to be looked at completely differently.

Having said that, Spieth will be hoping that he is not the one who drives that interest.
