Newcastle United may not have a big budget this summer, so it’s great news for them for that Jetro Willems is a free agent.

The Magpies will have to cut their cloth accordingly, with Mike Ashley unlikely to change his approach and suddenly go on a spending spree.

Free agents may be prime targets for Steve Bruce, and that’s where left back Willems could fit the bill for the Magpies.

Willems strongly linked with Newcastle return

Dutch defender Willems impressed on loan at Newcastle in 2019, but suffered a major knee injury early in 2020. He hasn’t played a game since.

Bild reported last month that Willems will be rejoining Newcastle on a free transfer this summer after Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed they’re releasing him.

That could be a gamble given Willems’ lack of playing time over the last 18 months, but Bruce liked him in his first stint at Newcastle and he could add cheap depth.

What has Willems said about Newcastle?

Willems has now spoken to The Chronicle, admitting that he wants ‘something else’ after his time in Germany.

The 27-year-old noted that he had a ‘great time’ at Newcastle, and the Magpies are a ‘very nice option’ for him in the transfer market.

Willems has even joined an UK-based agency, possibly in the hope of landing a Premier League move – and Newcastle would have to be favourites.

“I had great time at Newcastle and for me I want something else. I had a good time in Germany and won some titles and some nice things but I wanted something else,” said Willems.

“Of course Newcastle is a very nice option for me. I was there for a long time – like, half a year – and I was enjoying the moment there. It’s a great option and it’s a club which knows me, I know them. It would be great to join them. To be honest I don’t know where everything stands right now. I told my agent – I’m at CAA Base now, a UK agency – I want to go on vacation first and then when I come back I’ll speak about clubs, the clubs he has interested and what is going on,” he added.
