Jannik Sinner has weighed in on Coco Gauff’s Australian Open racket smash, a moment that has sparked plenty of debate across the tennis world.

It has become one of the main storylines over the past few days, even with several high-profile matches taking place.

Part of that may be down to what has felt like a lack of drama throughout the tournament, which has pushed more attention towards incidents happening off the court.

The situation unfolded after Gauff lost to Elina Svitolina, with her decision to smash her racket coming away from the cameras. Even so, it was picked up and shared widely.

Gauff kept her emotions in check throughout what was a tough defeat and waited until she was off the court before letting her frustration show.

Despite that, footage of the incident still found its way into public view, adding unnecessary attention to an already disappointing day for her.

Speaking about the moment, Sinner said he understood where she was coming from.

“It can happen, no? We’re athletes, we invest our whole life to be the best version of ourselves. But sometimes losses hurt. I understand the frustration as a player.”

He added: “She gives everything on court, she never says a word out of place, she’s a good girl.”

Sinner has bigger things to focus on at this point in the tournament with his upcoming semi-final clash against Novak Djokovic taking priority over any off-court topics.

Is Jannik Sinner the clear favourite against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open?

Sinner came into this tournament as the clear favourite, aiming for a third straight title.

But Carlos Alcaraz has put together an impressive run of his own. The young Spaniard has already made it further in this tournament than ever before, and is quickly joining Sinner at the top of pre-match discussions.

Meanwhile, Djokovic’s path to the last four has not been smooth, but he has benefited from a couple of key breaks along the way.

First, there was Jakub Mensik’s withdrawal before their fourth-round match. Then in his quarter-final, Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire with an injury despite being two sets up on the scoreboard.

Remarkably, Djokovic has reached the semi-finals of this Grand Slam despite having played only 11 sets of tennis.

This year luck does appear to be favouring him more than usual, giving him some much-needed time to recover before facing Sinner.

This is likely his best opportunity to secure a 25th Grand Slam title.
