Jamie Redknapp has questioned whether reaching the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester United has played a role in Newcastle United’s form, or lack thereof after their 2-0 loss against Liverpool.
Ultimately, there is no way of actually discovering that, as the stats show that the absence of Bruno Guimaraes after his sending off in the semi-final has played a major role in the side’s underperformance lately.
And now, Newcastle have suffered a defeat against an out-of-form Liverpool side but Jamie Redknapp wonders whether reaching the Carabao Cup final is potentially to blame for that.
Jamie Redknapp on Newcastle United’s lack of form due to Carabao Cup final after Liverpool defeat
Before the game, Eddie Howe’s side were finally expected to get a win under their belt against Jurgen Klopp’s men, winning a mere game out of their last 6 league outings.
However, that was not to be for Newcastle against Liverpool, as Jamie Redknapp said after the game on Sky Sports, “This run of form has coincided with them getting to the [Carabao] cup final. You do not know what that does to players. Maybe there is pressure and expectation. Can they win a trophy?”

“Today will feel like a huge blow.”
Potential reason: tiredness and lack of squad depth
Well, it was reported recently after the side’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth that those within the dressing room were quite ‘jaded’ and the squad’s lack of depth was seemingly costing them.
So far, the club have now reached a stage in their takeover where they have had enough time to add sufficient numbers to their ensemble.
While Jamie Redknapp has made a fair point about the pressure of reaching the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester United, there seem to be other problems currently at Newcastle, which manifested themselves against Liverpool on Saturday.
