James Trafford stepped in to defend Ben White after the defender was booed by England fans during the 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

The reaction surprised many, especially given White’s performances in training leading up to the match.

But the context behind the boos runs deeper than just one game.

James Trafford backs Ben White after Wembley boos vs Uruguay

England goalkeeper James Trafford addressed the situation following the match.

“I haven’t spoken to him, but he’s obviously a top player, and he’s been brilliant so far in the week. He’s a great lad, and yeah, everyone really likes him,” Trafford said.

“He’s a great lad. It was obviously a different night with getting booed, apparently, but yeah, he’s a great lad,” he added.

The England goalkeeper focused on support, making it clear the squad stands behind White despite the reaction.

It also reflects how the incident was viewed internally compared to the noise outside.

Ben White booed after controversial return and costly moments vs Uruguay

Ben White’s reception at Wembley was tied to both past and present factors during the 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

The defender was making his first England appearance since leaving the 2022 World Cup early for personal reasons and later making himself unavailable for selection, something that did not sit well with sections of the fanbase.

He was booed when introduced, and even after scoring to give England the lead, before later conceding a stoppage-time penalty that allowed Federico Valverde to equalise.

The sequence saw him go from hero to villain in a matter of minutes, amplifying the crowd’s reaction.

The combination of his controversial return and decisive moments in the match explains why the response was so strong. It also highlights how quickly sentiment can turn in international football.
