Jacob Butterfield may have burned another of his bridges with Derby County. The Rams midfielder joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan deal last week, with Owls striker Sam Winnall moving in the opposite direction.

The Sheffield Star shortly after revealed that Wednesday have an option to sign Butterfield permanently next summer, which the player has already admitted an interest in doing – to the annoyance of some Derby supporters.

Were the Owls to opt against a full-time deal, however, Butterfield could face an awkward reunion with his parent club, with whom he is under contract until 2019.

Discussing his move to Hillsborough, the 27-year-old told the Sheffield Star: “I spoke to my agent early last week and just said Derby’s style of play was not really the way I like to play my football.

“I just had a feeling that he [Derby manager Gary Rowett] wanted to play a more direct, physical style.

“I said I didn’t want to spend the season on the bench and my agent made some calls and I had a few options.

“Initially Derby were not considering a loan but I think as deadline day went on they needed to move some players to release some funds to make signings.

“I had a few options but Wednesday made their interest known on Thursday afternoon and it all happened very quickly.”

Speaking to BBC Derby Sport on Thursday, Rowett claimed that despite comments made by his Wednesday counterpart Carlos Carvalhal earlier this week, Butterfield was not the Owls’ first choice.

“Contrary to reports, Sheffield Wednesday actually asked for Craig Bryson first,” he said.

Bryson instead joined Cardiff City, with Derby trying and failing to sign Birmingham City midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld as the Scot’s replacement.
