Sheffield Wednesday have an option to sign Derby County midfielder Jacob Butterfield on a permanent basis next summer, according to The Sheffield Star.

Butterfield moved to Hillsborough on a season-long loan shortly before Thursday’s 11pm transfer deadline – a deal which saw Owls striker Sam Winnall head in the opposite direction.

It is unclear, however, whether a similar option is in place for Winnall to become a full-time Derby player.

According to Butterfield, who cost the Rams £5 million from Huddersfield Town summers ago (Transfermarkt), Wednesday tried to buy him outright initially. And by the sound of things, the 27-year-old would be keen to put pen to paper should the opportunity arise.

He told The Sheffield Star: “I think the manager of Sheffield Wednesday (Carlos Carvalhal) wanted to try and do a permanent deal which I was all for but for whatever reason it couldn’t get agreed.

“We have gone with a loan to begin but Sheffield Wednesday is a great club and I definitely would have committed to the club on a permanent basis if that had been agreed.

“I just need to take it one step at a time and focus on rediscovering some form and bringing my best football to the team.

“I’m sure if I do that then my future will take care of itself. If it is a successful season for me and the team then that will be great for everybody.”

Butterfield is in line to make his Wednesday debut on Saturday, when Derby’s fierce rivals Nottingham Forest visit Hillsborough in the Championship.

Owls midfielder Sam Hutchinson is not expected to be fit in time, while two more, Barry Bannan and Kieran Lee could also miss out due to injury and a lack of match practice respectively.
