Rory McIlroy joined an exclusive group when he won The Masters in April, becoming just the sixth player to complete golf’s career Grand Slam – matching a feat first achieved by Jack Nicklaus back in 1966.
It took him over a decade to win all four majors, something Nicklaus managed by age 26.
McIlroy has been the most consistent force in the game since Tiger Woods, though Scottie Scheffler is starting to close that gap in terms of both PGA Tour wins and majors.
Even so, it is Nicklaus who remains the ultimate benchmark for greatness with his record 18 major titles. His place at the top of golfing history is still unmatched.
Before The Masters each year, McIlroy meets with ‘The Golden Bear’ to discuss his strategy for the tournament at Augusta National.
And a year before he finally broke through at Augusta, Nicklaus voiced a significant concern about his mindset.
What Jack Nicklaus had to say about Rory McIlroy in 2024

Nicklaus has always been a strong supporter of McIlroy.
But that support comes with its own frustrations, especially for someone who has seen so much of the game. Nicklaus has spoken before about wanting to see more from McIlroy, knowing how much potential he has.
Back in 2024, ‘The Golden Bear’ opened up about something he had noticed in McIlroy’s game that bothered him.
“I only have one criticism of Rory,” Nicklaus began by saying.
“You have to concentrate 100 per cent of the time. For some reason, Rory always has a little bit of a lapse somewhere around the tournament. He’ll find a double bogey or triple bogey that sneaks in there.
“I don’t know how he does it or why he does it, but it happens. And I wish that wouldn’t happen.”
McIlroy answered his critics’ doubts by finally achieving victory at Augusta National in April.
The interesting part was that his win did not come from playing perfect golf. In fact, he made four double bogeys during the week but managed to offset them with plenty of birdies and eagles.
Jack Nicklaus gives reaction to Rory McIlroy missing The Memorial Tournament
Back in May, McIlroy surprised many by choosing not to play in The Memorial at ‘Jack’s Place’.
When asked for his thoughts on the Northern Irishman missing the event at Muirfield Village, Nicklaus responded: “Yeah, it surprised me. But, you know, guys have got schedules and got things they do. And, you know, I haven’t talked to him for him to tell me why or why not. It’s just his call.
“I made a lot of calls that I had to make when I played to play or not play and sometimes it wasn’t as popular as people thought it was. But, you know, sometimes you have to make those calls.
“I don’t hold anything against Rory for that.“
Nicklaus did not seem to have any hard feelings about McIlroy’s choice to skip the tournament.
This further supported the idea that he is a big admirer of McIlroy.
