Jordan Pickford has hailed Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane as a ‘top athlete’ and someone ‘you look up to’.

The Everton goalkeeper added that Harry Kane sets ‘high standards’ after he recently became England’s highest-ever goalscorer.

That record-breaking moment came in Naples when the 29-year-old scored from the penalty spot during England’s nervy 2-1 win over Italy for their Euro 2024 qualifier.

That was goal number 54, which took him past former Everton and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, and then he added number 55 against Ukraine on Sunday.

Kane will now run away with this record and he will be hoping to get close to that 100 mark, and dare it be said, raise his bat for his century once his career is finished.

Either way, he is someone that is hugely admired by his teammates and Everton’s number one keeper is no different, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“I have said for a number of years, Kane is a top professional and a top athlete,” said Pickford. “The captain of the country. He leads on and off the pitch.

“Someone you can look up to and the standards he sets. We all try to set high standards. But he leads by example.

On what he has learnt from Kane: “Don’t come up against him every week,” laughed Pickford. “He’s a top striker. I think he is a good lad. Humble and he works hard.

“Every time he is out on the training pitch, he wants to improve. He gives his all. That’s something I do. I give my all. I do everything to be the best version of myself and I think that’s what Harry does as well.”

TOTTENHAM’S INTEREST IN PICKFORD

With Hugo Lloris heading for the exit door at Hotspur Way, sooner rather than later, there had been talk about a new goalkeeper coming in this summer.

Many names have been thrown about, including that of Pickford before the £30 million star recently signed a new contract at Goodison Park.

That means that Spurs, who are without a manager after sacking Antonio Conte, now have to look elsewhere for a new shot-stopper.
