Jody Morris has expressed his disappointment at the possibility of Mason Mount leaving Chelsea and securing a summer transfer to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The former Chelsea coach added that Mason Mount’s situation at Stamford Bridge is ‘bizarre’ and he would find it ‘very difficult’ if he ended up at clubs like Liverpool or Manchester United next season, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports News (24/05/23 at 11:30 am).

Despite coming through the club’s academy and winning the Champions League with his boyhood club, contact issues could now result in the midfielder hitting the exit door this summer.

The 24-year-old isn’t short of any offers because a number of elite teams are keen to take him on board, including Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, second-placed Arsenal and Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Mount divides opinion as a player, but the fact that three high-quality teams and coaches want to sign him, tells you everything you need to know.

But for Morris, who helped bring the goalscoring midfielder through at Chelsea, he isn’t happy that he could be about to leave, and that to a possible Premier League rival.

“The word bizarre is right,” said Morris. “But I think there are a few words you can attach to that.

“I think it’s sad. If you are looking at a club, like Chelsea, if Mason Mount is to walk out, then I think it’s a sad time, not only for the club, but for Mason as well. I know how much he loves the club. I know how much he wanted or wants to stay at the club.

“I would imagine those clubs (Manchester United and Liverpool) are absolutely in for him. I would imagine there are a few other names on that list as well, especially when you look at people like Thomas Tuchel going in at Bayern Munich.

“For us as a club, if we are letting one of our homegrown players, one of our best players leave the club, and go to a rival, then it’s going to pose some questions and we as fans would find that difficult to read – I would find it difficult to take to see Mase leave and join a Premier League rival.”

MOUNT A ‘HUGE PLAYER’ FOR CHELSEA

Those were the words of stand-in coach Frank Lampard when he returned to Chelsea in April, but given that he is just warming the seat, then he can’t do much if Mount isn’t pushed to stay on because he will be gone by next week.

Luckily for the club, they have so many players across the pitch that they can probably afford to lose the England international.

But if he ends up producing the goods elsewhere, whilst Chelsea continue to struggle next season, then fans will seriously express their displeasure.
