So long as Kylian Mbappe’s contract expires in 2022, Liverpool have a chance of signing the superstar.
The Transfer Window Podcast reported in August that Liverpool intend to sign the Paris Saint-Germain hitman next summer when his deal runs out.
It has been reported by The Athletic that PSG don’t expect the France international to leave for nothing.
But that went out on September 15 and two weeks later, there is still no sign of the player committing his future to the Ligue 1 giants.
That being said, Karim Benzema believes Liverpool will ultimately fail to sign the player by claiming to L’Equipe that it’s only a matter of time before Real Madrid sign him.
The Spanish giants are the Reds’ biggest rivals in regards to Mbappe’s signature.
And Benzema, his teammate at international level, believes that the 22-year-old is destined for the Bernabeu.
He said: “He will play at Real Madrid one day. I don’t know when, but he’ll come. It’s a question of time.”
Ominous for Liverpool?
Well, yes.
As mentioned, the Real Madrid star and Mbappe – who earns £310,000 per week in Paris – play together for France and it’s certainly plausible that there’s been conversations between the two about the young man’s long-term future.
And the confidence with which Benzema claimed that Mbappe would join Los Blancos at one point should certainly make Liverpool fans pessimistic.
But as mentioned above, his contract is still valid until 2022 and if it’s just Madrid and Jurgen Klopp’s side in the reckoning, there is some hope.
