Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has outlined Liverpool’s plan to sign Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer next summer.
Yes, you read that right, Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a move for Mbappe, and they plan to lure him to Anfield using a unique deal.
Indeed, McGarry says that Liverpool will attempt to sign him on a Bosman next summer, and they believe they can convince him to spend a few years on Merseyside by offering him a unique deal with a ‘get-out clause’ that would allow him to be in control of his own destiny.
What’s been said?
McGarry gave an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Mbappe.
“Our understanding is that while Liverpool can’t necessarily afford a transfer fee in the region of what Chelsea paid for Romelu Lukaku, they can afford a move for Mbappe under freedom of contract next summer, when he will be out of his current deal with PSG. Of course, the wages will be substantial, but again, Mbappe is interested in making the move to Liverpool, something that Jurgen Klopp has a central role in, in regards to Mbappe’s respect and admiration for the German coach,” McGarry said.
“We know that Real Madrid are interested as well and that will be an option for him. However, it is information reported to us that Liverpool are pursuing and they believe they have an opportunity in which they may be able to get Mbappe for two or three years if they include a get-out clause in his contract, which would be signed under freedom of movement, so Mbappe would be in charge of his future in terms of leaving Liverpool at the point he wants to, so his career plan would be one he’s completely in charge of.”

Risky, but worth it
This would of course be a massive risk, signing a player on huge wages knowing he’s likely to leave after two or three years, but signing Mbappe could allow Liverpool to dominate during that period.
The Reds’ current squad is peaking right now, so their best bet may be to strike while the iron is hot, sign Mbappe for a couple of years, pick up a few trophies, before going through a period of transition.
From a business perspective, this may not be the best move the Reds ever make, but if they can pull this off, they’ll be one of the scariest teams on the planet.
