Kevin Hatchard has spoken highly about Ajax defender Jurrien Timber and his qualities as he closes in on a transfer to Premier League giants, Arsenal.

The European football expert shared that Jurrien Timber is someone who would ‘appeal to Mikel Arteta‘ because of the versatility to his game.

Whilst all the transfer talk is about Arsenal trying to sign Declan Rice, the club is also looking to boost their backline and it has been suggested that Timber is eager to join.

Mainly a centre-back, who can also operate as a right-back, if Arsenal can get the 22-year-old’s signature over the line, then it will see him compete with the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel for starting spots.

It could also see certain players head for the exit door because it pushes them down the pecking order, with suggestions that Rob Holding could be plying his trade in the Turkish league next season.

Either way, ahead of Timber’s expected arrival, Hatchard shared a low down on what the player is like and what he will bring to the table in north London.

“What we saw with Arsenal towards the end of the season was a lack of squad depth, particularly in that area,” said Hatchard.

“I think when William Saliba got that back injury, it really set them back. Timber is the guy that could come in and be a strong part of the squad, no doubt about that.

“He is somebody who has been successful with Ajax. He had a decent World Cup with the Netherlands. He’s not the tallest or the most commanding centre-back.

“But he is ever so good on the ball. Really nice passer off the ball. He can play at right-back as well, which I think would appeal to Mikel Arteta and he does tend to like players who can cover numerous positions.”

Arsenal next season

For 80% of last season, Arsenal were going great guns and they were headed for the Premier League title.

But when it mattered most, they shot themselves in the foot, and opened the door for Manchester City, who proceeded to walk all over them.

Some point towards Arsenal’s lack of quality on their bench as one of the reasons behind them stumbling, well, bringing in the likes of Timber, Rice and Kai Havertz to enhance that squad will only increase their chances of getting over the line next season.
