Speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s Twitch channel (12/10/21 1:10PM) The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has shared an update on Newcastle United’s transfer plans under their new owners.
There’s been so much speculation about who Newcastle will sign under their new ownership, and while the likes of Kylian Mbappe have been linked, McGrath is led to believe that the Magpies won’t go for that type of player just yet.
Indeed, McGrath says that Newcastle will spend good amounts on players who represent good value in the market, stating that they may look for players who have a similar profile to James Tarkowski, who they have been linked with.
What’s been said?
McGrath shared what he knows about Newcastle’s transfer plans.
“It will be a case of, I do think they will look at the market and they won’t go straight to the very top. They’ll spend good amounts on value players in the market. We’ve reported James Tarkowski as one they’re looking at and it will be that profile of player. An excellent Premier League player, not £100m, but he has a contract that is expiring next summer, so maybe in January or maybe a free. They won’t go for the galacticos already, that’s the way they’re going to go,” McGrath said.

Slow build
Newcastle may well be challenging at the top-end of the Premier League in a few years’ time, but it seems as though this will be something of a slow build.
The Magpies may have an exciting future, but right now, the reality is that they’re in a relegation battle and it’s going to be hard to convince these so-called galacticos to come to St James’ Park right now.
Players like Tarkowski will undoubtedly improve the squad and will help Newcastle reach the next level before they eventually aim for the stratosphere.
