Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:24pm, March 17, 2023) that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United might not be in as good a position as they are in now next season.

The former Liverpool defender believes that both Arsenal and Newcastle need to make the most of their situation now.

Arsenal are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment and could win the title this season.

Only defending champions Manchester City could realistically stop them from becoming the champions of England.

Newcastle are very much in the race for the Premier League top four.

Liverpool are struggling, while Chelsea are unlikely to even challenge for the UEFA Champions League places in the league table now.

Carragher made the comments after Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground in the Premier League on Friday evening.

The Sky Sports pundit has warned Arsenal and Newcastle not to settle for anything less than the title and the top four respectively.

Jamie Carragher on Arsenal and Newcastle United

Carragher said: “I think the one thing is that It reminds me a little bit about Arsenal at the top of the table. It was unexpected. Newcastle’s position they are in, I wouldn’t say they have to win, but it doesn’t mean that they have come so close, they will be in the same position next season.”

The pundit added: “I do think in some ways, and I am not trying to put the pressure on Newcastle, it is vitally important to try and get the fourth position and not thinking it’s going to happen next season. Because it might not. It might not be the same for Arsenal.”

Big chance

Jamie Carragher is right – Arsenal and Newcastle United have to seize the opportunity.

They simply have to.

No one would have expected Arsenal to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

And no one would have thought that Newcastle could end up in the UEFA Champions League places.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all will do better next season, and so will Tottenham Hotspur.

So, this season is massive for both Arsenal and Newcastle.
