Frank Lampard has revealed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is injured after a “freak” incident, amid claims that Newcastle were preparing a bid.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle will now have to look elsewhere, as the 25-year-old may miss up to three months of action.

Of course, the Magpies could follow through with a deal, but it would be a seriously risky move to spend a significant fee on Calvert-Lewin without knowing how he will recover from the issue.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Lampard said: “He’s had an injury in training. It was a freak injury in a simple passing action. He felt a little bit of an issue with the outside of his knee but we’re assessing it. I’m not here to give you a time frame on when he’ll be back.”

The incident comes after the Telegraph claimed that Newcastle were set to bid for the England international, as Dan Ashworth – Director of Football at St James’ Park – continues his hunt for a new striker.

Everton are said to value Calvert-Lewin at £60m.

Earlier this year, it was suggested that Newcastle had mentioned the Everton No.9 in recruitment meetings as they aimed to give Eddie Howe a new Alan Shearer.

While Calvert-Lewin isn’t quite as good as the 51-year-old was, he is still a quality forward.

Newcastle’s interest in the Sheffield-born striker comes after he scored five goals in 17 appearances last term, in what was an injury-hit season.

However, in the previous campaign, Calvert-Lewin showed what he can do when fit with 21 goals in 39 appearances.

Newcastle must avoid Dominic Calvert-Lewin

In our view, there are better options out there for Newcastle.

£60m is a lot to spend on a player who has just endured an injury-hit campaign, and has also just suffered another injury in training as Lampard revealed.

For example, West Ham signed Gianluca Scamacca for £35.5m, a player who scored 16 goals in Serie A last season.

That is much better value than Calvert-Lewin for £60m, so Newcastle must scour the market to see who else they can find – clearly, there are quality options out there.
