Rangers fans were desperate to see Motherwell talisman Louis Moult swap Firhill for Ibrox in the January transfer window.

Rangers fans were understandably disappointed that their side did not do more to bring their frequent tormentor Louis Moult to Ibrox.

Championship side Preston North End have agreed a deal to sign the Motherwell forward for £450,000 in January, according to the Daily Record. That is excellent value for the top scorer in Scottish football – and a fee that would have been well within Rangers’ budget.

And The Gers know just how good Moult can be. Just two months ago, his stunning double sealed Motherwell’s place in the Scottish League Cup final at their expense. But despite needing a goalscorer to take the pressure off Alfredo Morelos, director of football Mark Allen appears to have dropped the ball.

As reported by the Daily Record, it is understood that the former Manchester City academy chief is in control of transfers with no manager at the helm of Ibrox after the sacking of Pedro Caixinha back in October.

Allen has not worked in a director of football capacity before, however, and perhaps this inexperience has shone through with Rangers unable to lure a player who would have immediately improved their starting XI.

So maybe supporters should be a little concerned that Allen is set to take control of recruitment in January. Many fans were furious that Moult slipped through Rangers’ grasp and now Allen faces a challenge to win over the doubters as he prepares to play a central role in transfer policy over the next month or so.

As it stands, however, the Ibrox faithful may be concerned as a target best described as a ‘no-brainer’ passes the club by.
