Tottenham managed to complete the £40m signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon on transfer deadline day.

The deal initially seemed to have collapsed when The Athletic revealed that negotiations had hit a brick wall, although Spurs managed to salvage the transfer before terminating Matt Doherty’s contract as well.

Now, after the dust settled on what was an intense transfer saga, an interesting detail has emerged from Portugal.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Portuguese news outlet Record, Manchester City tried to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Porro.

The Citizens decided to loan Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich after the Portugal international fell out with Pep Guardiola, and the Spaniard was keen to pinch Porro from the clutches of Tottenham as a replacement.

Thankfully for the north Londoners, the right wing-back ignored Manchester City – who actually sold him to Sporting Lisbon in 2022 – and stuck to his word, which should already make him a fan favourite in N17 before a ball is kicked.

After all, it would have been an act of greed from Manchester City if they did manage to sign Porro, as Guardiola already has Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis to play in that area.

Contrastingly, Conte only had Emerson Royal to choose from before Porro arrived – now Doherty is gone – a player who has failed to live up to expectations since his £25.8m move from Barcelona in August 2021.

Porro can transform Tottenham

Just by watching the Spain international in action a few times, it is obvious that he has everything a wing-back needs to shine under Conte.

Porro boasts incredible crossing ability, while he also has the stamina to get up and down the right flank throughout 90 minutes to great effect.

With Dejan Kulusevski also operating on that side, usually cutting infield where opposition full-backs follow him, there should be plenty of space for Porro to surge into and make an impact.

Hopefully, the Spaniard can be everything Tottenham fans hoped to see from Emerson and Doherty.
