Inter scouting Tottenham target Piero Hincapie after World Cup heroics

Inter Milan are reportedly scouting Ecuador international Piero Hincapie at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Tottenham also linked with signing the Bayer Leverkusen defender.

According to CalcioMercato, the 20-year-old defender is on Inter’s radar ahead of the January transfer window, with Inter already warming to the idea of offering Robin Gosens to Leverkusen in a player-plus-cash deal to sign Hincapie after the World Cup.

The South American youngster started for Ecuador in the opening game of the World Cup against Qatar as Hincapie kept a clean sheet and ensured that the visiting nation got off to a perfect start in their quest to qualify for the round of 16.

And now, Inter could move to sign Hincapie, though the Serie A giants will face competition from the likes of Tottenham who according to CalcioMercto is wanted by Antonio Conte, with Leverkusen open to selling the youngster in January for £22m.

Whilst Hincapie’s club form has been quite poor, the defender is so far enjoying a good World Cup with Ecuador, and a boost in confidence could be all that’s needed for the youngster to recapture the form that made the 20-year-old such an exciting prospect to begin with.

Moreover, interest from Inter could spur Hincapie to hit his peak in terms of performances. Yet for Tottenham, missing out on the centre-back to a European rival will sting for Conte, with the youngster perfect for what the Italian manager wants in the January transfer window.

Inter signing Hincapie is the last thing Tottenham need

January is slowly morphing into a key month for Tottenham, with fans hopeful that Conte is backed in order to make the signings needed to guarantee a top-four spot and to challenge in both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. Which is why Inter landing Hincapie could cause some problems.

After all, the defender would be perfect for Tottenham in both the short and long term, and missing out on Hincapie to Inter of all clubs will hurt for Conte and his team, especially if the Ecuador international continues to impress in Qatar for his national team.
