Cast your mind back to this summer and you’ll remember that Tottenham were desperate for a new left-sided centre-back.
The north London club went all around the houses in their search for a new defender, exploring options such as Josko Gvardiol, Ilya Zabarnyi, and, of course, Alessandro Bastoni.
Eventually, Tottenham settled on Clement Lenglet on loan – which isn’t working out all that well, but things perhaps could’ve been even worse.
Indeed, back in the summer, Spurs were reportedly very keen on a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, but they seemingly had a lucky escape when missing out on this transfer.
Since being linked to Spurs, Hincapie’s form has nosedived.
Of course, it doesn’t help that Leverkusen are having a torrid start to their Bundesliga season, but Hincapie is contributing to that in his own way.
In 10 league appearances this season, Hincapie has only overseen two clean sheets, shipping 20 goals in the process – averaging two conceded per game.
Meanwhile, he’s also been sent off twice in 10 appearances, meaning that he’s had as many red cards as clean sheets this season.
Put simply, Hincapie hasn’t been reliable at all as a defender.
He’s had the odd game where his work on the ball is on show, and in those matches, Leverkusen often play well, but when his team are under the cosh a little bit, he often loses his head and makes rash decisions.
The South American is having a torrid season, and while he may have fared better at Spurs, his performances this term probably mean that he’s missed his chance to move to one of the Premier League’s truly elite clubs as his stock has dropped massively since the links to Spurs in the summer.
