Arsenal legend and Invincible Robert Pires has urged the Gunners to sign another English defender in January after spending £50m on Ben White in the summer.
Speaking to the Mirror, the former French international claimed that Arsenal should be eyeing an English defender. With Pires debating that Mikel Arteta needs more homegrown players in the squad.
For the first time in some time, there is an English feel around Arsenal. With three players featuring for the Three Lions in the most international break that play their football for the north London side.
With White impressing, there’s a strong chance this number could increase to four in the next international window. Yet for Pires, the club need to do more on their English quota. With the ex-Arsenal star urging Edu Gaspar to spend again in January.
Pires said: “It is difficult but in January if Arsenal can spend money maybe on a defender because I think our midfield and strikers are very good players. In my opinion, sign English players because we need English players in this squad.
The Arsenal icon added: “For example, in my time I played with Tony Adams, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown, Ashley Cole, and this is the base for your team. They need to spend the money on a defender in my opinion, English.”
Arsenal should be avoiding defenders at all cost in January

It is easy to see why Pires believes Arsenal need an English defender in January. However, whilst the Gunners sit with a goal difference of -4 in the Premier League, the problem seems to be a lack of bite in the attack.
Indeed, Arsenal have performed well this season in most games. Yet a lack of goals has been a real problem for Arteta’s side. And in January, this problem should be remedied with a new arrival in the attack.
