Eddie Howe has been speaking about Elliot Anderson ahead of the Carabao Cup clash between Newcastle and Tranmere on Wednesday evening.

What’s the story?

Well, the 44-year-old revealed that the Scotland Under-21 international is “chomping at the bit” to make his first appearance for Newcastle since Steve Bruce departed.

Anderson is arguably the brightest prospect at Newcastle, and was even likened to Diego Maradona by Joey Barton during a stunning loan spell at Bristol Rovers last season, but he is yet to play a competitive game under Howe.

The 19-year-old was given chances during pre-season, and has also been working tirelessly at Little Benton as he aims to make the starting XI for tomorrow’s trip to Tranmere.

Howe said: “Elliot is chomping at the bit to be involved. He’s trained very well. He hasn’t appeared yet in the Premier League but his performances in training haven’t dipped so he’s in a good place.”

In our view, it would be a harsh decision to leave Anderson out.

The teenager proved himself in the Under-21 setup with 16 goals in 32 appearances, and he also showed he can compete in senior football while on loan at Bristol Rovers last season.

Anderson scored eight goals and provided five assists in 21 appearances, including a dramatic strike on the final day which handed Bristol Rovers a 7-0 win, enough to lift them into League One on goal difference – Gary Lineker described the outcome as “amazing”.

Tranmere are currently in League Two themselves, a level Anderson has already proven himself at, so Howe has no excuse not to start him on Wednesday evening.

Elliot Anderson could step up for Newcastle

If Anderson does start against Tranmere, and proceeds to impress, it could be a significant moment for the youngster.

Howe added that Callum Wilson will miss the game with a hamstring injury, and it remains to be seen how long the England international will be absent.

Therefore, if Anderson get himself a few goals, and continues to shine in training, it is possible that Howe gives him an opportunity in the Premier League.

Hopefully, the Whitley Bay-born forward is given a chance against Tranmere.
