Imane Khelif did not hedge her words when addressing comments linked to Donald Trump.

The Algerian boxer offered a direct response that centred on identity, truth, and the conditions under which respect is earned.

Khelif spoke openly about the situation in an interview with L’Équipe, setting firm boundaries around how she expects to be spoken about.

She said, “I respect everyone, and I respect Trump because he’s the president of the United States. Trump cannot distort the truth. I’m not trans, I’m a girl.

“I was raised as a girl, I grew up as a girl, people in my village have always known me as a girl.”

The statement was framed calmly but forcefully. Khelif made it clear that respect, in her view, does not mean silence or compliance when identity is questioned.

Her words also reflected frustration at narratives she believes ignore her lived experience. Rather than debating labels, she focused on asserting facts about who she is and how she has always been known.

The condition Imane Khelif set for respecting Donald Trump

Khelif went further by outlining the single condition under which she believes respect should be mutual.

She stated: “I respect him if he respects the truth. If I could say something to him? Mr. President, I’m a girl, a young Arab Muslim woman, a boxer.”

She then tied that message to her sporting ambition, adding, “And I’m working so you can come and give me a medal on the podium in Los Angeles.”

The comment shifted the focus away from controversy and back toward competition. Khelif positioned achievement as her answer, not argument.

The message was blunt but measured. Respect for Khelif is not automatic or symbolic. It is earned through the acknowledgement of truth.

Rather than escalating rhetoric, she closed by setting a clear goal. Let performance speak, and let recognition follow.
