Tottenham were reportedly willing to make Real Madrid star Marco Asensio a star player at the club should he had joined.
According to Marca, Spurs were eager to sign the Spanish international over the summer. AC Milan were also in talks with Asensio, but it was Tottenham who were the most aggressive in attempting to sign the winger.
So much so that as per the report, the north London side were willing to give the 25-year-old playmaker ‘star treatment’. Asensio, though, remained in Madrid as the transfer window closed.
Tottenham have had a mixed start to the season. Whilst Nuno Espirito Santo’s side claimed three wins in a row in their opening fixtures, Spurs have since suffered two 3-0 defeats back to back.
Indeed, their lack of bite in attack has been a key reason why Tottenham have struggled in recent weeks. And a creative presence in the squad, such as Asensio, could have been a welcome addition this summer.
With Fabio Paratici now at the helm, though, there is a chance that Spurs could return for Asensio in the January transfer window. Yet on social media, Tottenham fans were appalled by the latest rumour.
Some supporters believe that Asensio is not worth giving the star treatment too, with a few Tottenham fans claiming that there are better targets the club could woo.
