Stan Collymore has suggested that Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire might do well if he played alongside Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.
While claiming that big clubs who want to win the Premier League title would not sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United, the former Liverpool striker has noted that the England international midfielder might do well if he played with Virgil van Dijk.
Maguire is struggling to get playing time for Manchester United and is not doing particularly well for England either.
West Ham United reportedly wanted to sign the £200,000-a-week (SalarySport) defender in the summer transfer window, but that move fell through.
Stan Collymore on Harry Maguire – Virgil van Dijk
Collymore wrote about Maguire in CaughtOffSide: “He isn’t good enough to be any top club’s first-choice centre-back.
“He’s a great career man. He’s gone from Sheffield United to Hull City, to Leicester and to Manchester United, and none of that is his fault.

“But he isn’t good enough.
“If you had Virgil Van Dijk playing next to him, you might get away with it, but no top-six club with serious ambitions of winning titles and silverware would choose Maguire.”
Maguire would struggle with Van Dijk
We do not think that Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire would play well alongside Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk has not been at his best for a while now.
The Netherlands international centre-back is being caught out at times these days.
Opposition players are running at him.
The former Celtic star is not simply the force he once was.
Maguire is a good defender, but he is not world class.
The Englishman needs someone alongside him who will help him out and guide them.
And that defender should be at the top of his game and not make mistakes.
Maguire has made 220 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.
The defender has scored 11 goals, given eight assists, and kept 56 clean sheets in those games.
Van Dijk has played 231 matches in the Premier League so far in his career.
The Dutchman has scored 20 goals, given five assists, and kept 93 clean sheets in those games.
