City Football Group (includes Manchester City and many other clubs) director, Joan Patsy has claimed that Man City could have signed Liverpool-linked wonderkid Enzo Fernandez.
However, he has mentioned that the Premier League champions could only have completed a deal for the Argentine before he joined Benfica in January.
O Jogo have reported that Enzo Fernandez favours a transfer to Liverpool amidst constant rumours surrounding his future.
It has also been stated by the Portuguese newspaper that the Reds will match any offers made by rival clubs to sign the revered midfielder.
Clearly, Fernandez ranks high on Liverpool’s transfer priorities in 2023.
After all, the club’s lack of serious recruitment in the midfield department has met criticism from fans and pundits alike.
With Jordan Henderson and James Milner’s athleticism waning away, Fabinho enduring a fall from grace while Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho are just raw prospects, the Liverpool midfield is in serious need of a makeover.
And a player of the 21-year-old’s caliber, who happens to have a £105 million release clause (via Fabrizio Romano) could certainly do so if he heads to Merseyside.
City Football Group director says Man City could have signed Enzo Fernandez

City Football Group director, Joan Patsy has admitted that Man City were closing in on a deal for Enzo Fernandez, who has been linked with a switch to Liverpool.
“Manchester City could’ve signed Enzo Fernández, but what do we do if we have Gundogan, Bernardo and Rodri in the squad?”, he told Què T’hi Jugues.
“He would’ve cost us less than he did Benfica, but we didn’t have a place and we knew he wouldn’t play.”
As Enzo Fernandez is still on the market and is not donning sky blue, Liverpool should thank their lucky stars.
Now, Jurgen Klopp’s side should hope Man City do not enter the race to sign the World Cup winner, as it would not be a surprise if he decided to head to the Etihad Stadium.
