Rafa Benitez has told Sky Sports that ‘the objective’ is to add players to Everton’s squad that are ‘good for us’.
This comes after the Everton boss was asked about two specific transfer targets, Denzel Dumfries and Kalidou Koulibaly.
Both players have been linked with Everton this summer, with one rumour suggesting that they will make their first bid for Napoli defender, Koulibaly.
Whilst PSV Eindhoven’s flamboyant and bullet train-like right-back, Dumfries, is another player Everton are looking at.
This is the response Benitez gave when he was asked about the duo.
“The reality is that when you go to any club the manager has an important opinion,” said Benitez.
“But you have to work in the context that you have a director of football, the board, financial restrictions.
“I’m quite happy with the commitment of the lads, they’re training really well. I think we can improve things, and if we can add players that are good for us, that’s the objective.”
Under Farhad Moshiri’s reign, Everton managers have been able to splash the cash at will.
But will that now change under the stewardship of the more methodical and eagle-eyed, Benitez? It’s not like spending for fun has exactly worked, has it?
But, he does need the money to refresh this squad that needs more life, speed and depth.
If it’s a case of Benitez needing to do some cost-cutting before buying then it’s something that he is used to because he had to endure working under Mike Ashley at Newcastle for several years.
