Fulham loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah could reportedly return to Manchester United just halfway through his season-long loan spell, with the Cottagers set to sign Chelsea’s Gary Cahill – and Leeds must monitor the situation.

Love Sport Radio claim that Fulham are about to sign England international Cahill on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season, and Claudio Ranieri wants to make room for the Chelsea skipper.

According to the report, he will do that by sending 21-year-old Fosu-Mensah back to Old Trafford after the three-time Netherlands international has struggled to make the cut at Craven Cottage since joining in the summer.

The former Crystal Palace loanee managed just eight appearances for Fulham in the first half of the season, appearing only once as a substitute since the arrival of Leicester City legend Ranieri.

He is now set to return to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, but could leave in January once again having only played for one club this season. Leeds have to seriously consider a move.

That is because the Whites are struggling in a number of positions due to a whole host of injuries, especially at centre-back. Liam Cooper remains sidelined, as does Gaetano Berardi.

Leeds have also suffered injuries at right-back, while Kalvin Phillips is set to be banned for the next three games after his straight red card during the 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest.

It is clear that the Whites need cover in a number of positions, and that makes Fosu-Mensah perfect with the Dutchman able to play in a number of positions. He can operate at right-back, centre-back or in central midfield.

Raiding bitter rivals Manchester United for Fosu-Mensah would finally solve Leeds’ woes at the back and cover for Phillips in the number-four role. The only issue would be the player’s wages, which stands at £15,000 a week (Spotrac).
