Liverpool may be on a roll on the pitch right now, but they’re about to move into a whole new era behind the scenes.
Indeed, Michael Edwards is set to depart Anfield this summer, and Julian Ward is set to replace the very successful Sporting Director.
Ward has massive shoes to fill in the summer. After all, Edwards is the man who assembled a squad that won the Champions League and the Premier League, signing the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, players who, when all is said and done, will go down as true Liverpool legends.
Ward has a massive job on his hands in living up to the incredibly high standards Edwards has set, but if The Mirror’s report is true, one of his first signings for Liverpool could blow anything Edwards did out of the water.
Indeed, The Mirror claim that Liverpool could spend £90m this summer on a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.
That would be a club-record signing for Liverpool, and it could end up being one of the best signings they ever make.
At the age of just 18, Bellingham is already seen as one of Europe’s premier midfield talents, and he’s just finished second in the voting for the Kopa Trophy, with Lionel Messi even voting him as one of his picks.
Bellingham is clearly a very special player, and when it comes to long-term planning at any club, having a midfielder who could realistically be a star for the next 15 years is the perfect foundation.
Edwards made some amazing signings at Liverpool, there’s no doubt about that, but Bellingham is one of the most coveted and most talented teenagers on the planet right now, and if Ward can bring him to Anfield next summer, he could immediately outdo his predecessor.
