According to The Telegraph, Real Madrid are preparing a bid for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after Casemiro joined Manchester United this summer.

The Danish midfielder has been one of Tottenham’s most important players since the arrival of Antonio Conte, but, unfortunately for Spurs, the reality is that when Real Madrid come calling, it’s very hard to say no.

If these links between Hojbjerg and Madrid are legitimate, then Spurs will need to go out and sign a replacement.

Luckily for the north London outfit, they may already have the perfect man in mind, and if Hojbjerg leaves, they could move quickly to bring him in.

We’re talking about James Garner.

It’s no secret that Spurs are admirers of Garner. After all, they were consistently linked with the 21-year-old all of last week.

However, according to Alasdair Gold, Tottenham were reticent about signing Garner this summer as they didn’t think they could give him many minutes.

“The issue is, Manchester United are willing to let him go for around £15m, but from what I understand, I don’t think Spurs have decided whether or not they’ll make a move. The problem is gametime for him, he’s unlikely to get it at Spurs. So whether Spurs would be able to sign him and loan him out, players don’t often like the idea of that,” Gold said.

However, if Hojbjerg leaves for Madrid, that stumbling block would be removed and Garner could play semi-regularly as one of Spurs’ midfield rotational options.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur would be more than serviceable first-choice options, while Oliver Skipp and Garner would be waiting in the wings as the midfield pairing of the future.

Garner, as a midfielder who can operate brilliantly at either end of the pitch, would be a perfect replacement for Hojbjerg, and if the Dane were to move to Real Madrid, a move for the ‘obscene’ Manchester United talent may become a very real possibility.
