Darren Ambrose says he would ‘love’ for Tottenham Hotspur to sign Newcastle United transfer target James Maddison from Leicester City during the January transfer window.

Antonio Conte’s side are sitting in the final Champions League spots, and if they are to maintain that, then they will need to spend during the winter transfer window.

The same applies to Eddie Howe’s high-flying Newcastle United, who are well ahead of schedule, just a year after the Saudi-led takeover of their club.

From Sven Botman to club-record transfer Alexander Isak, the Magpies have put money on the table for young stars and, so far, it’s working out.

Could Maddison be the next one on the list, with the Foxes’ midfielder finding a possible transfer to St James’ Park appealing, well, former Newcastle player Ambrose wants to see the player in north London instead, as he told talkSPORT.

“Hold on to that player (if Leicester are to do well), particularly that player (Maddison),” said Ambrose.

“I for one, and I am sure you are the same, we all know where we want him to go. I would love to see him at Spurs.

“But he has been fantastic at Leicester. He’s got into the England World Cup squad by playing for Leicester and Brendan Rodgers.

“He may feel that the time is right (to leave). I am ambitious. I want to play Champions League football.”

MADDISON NEEDS TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP

One thing is for sure, come next season, Maddison needs to be playing for a team in Europe.

Whilst someone like Spurs can provide that right away because they are in the knockout stages of the Champions League, you can’t count your chickens on Newcastle.

The project that they are building will attract players and is attracting players.

But rather than Maddison moving in January, he should wait until the summer, see where the cards are on the table, and then make his pick because there could be every chance that Newcastle are in the Champions League and Spurs aren’t.
