Ian Wright says Liverpool transfer target Jamal Musiala has an ‘unknown ceiling’ to his game, like his former England teammate and now rival, Jude Bellingham, as he told ITV Sport.
The duo are close friends and come through the ranks together with England’s younger age groups, before Stuttgart-born Musiala opted to play for Germany rather than England on the international stage.
The script couldn’t have been written better when Bellingham then proceeded to land on Borussia Dortmund’s doorstep, with Musiala, both 19, on the other side at Bayern Munich.
During that time, Musiala, who made his World Cup debut for Germany during their shock defeat to Japan on Wednesday, has seen him compared to none other than Lionel Messi by German legend, Lothar Matthaus.
That’s a comparison former England striker Ian Wright didn’t like, as he praised the talent in Musiala’s boots and his call to play for Germany.
“When you look at the number of players that have chosen England over their own country, then it’s one we have to take,” said Wright. “We have to take that in our stride.
“Normally, you find that they come to England because they think they have a better chance of doing well. But he is going to Germany, who are, let’s face it, a better footballing international nation than ours and he’s good enough at 19 to play for Germany. He was born in Germany.
“I don’t want to see him get compared to Messi. The guy is trying to get his career going. But, like Bellingham, there is an unknown ceiling for this guy. You just wish him all the best.”
MUSIALA AND BELLINGHAM
It won’t happen, but that would be the dream double signing for a team like Liverpool. That’s what they need in their midfield.
Jurgen Klopp would do very well to get one of them to Merseyside, but even then, it might prove to be a tough call.
Bellingham is wanted by every top club in Europe and the price tag on his head will be ridiculous enough, whilst it’s not going to be easy to lure Musiala out of Bayern, in truth, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the duo reunite in Munich, instead.
