Ian Wright has singled out Willian for praise despite a poor Arsenal career.

The Brazil international had his Gunners contract terminated after a poor first year at the Emirates Stadium.

Willian joined on a free transfer following a lengthy career at Chelsea, but it never really worked out at Arsenal and he returned to his homeland.

However, Fulham snapped up the 34-year-old on a Bosman last summer and he has looked a different player to the one who struggled under Mikel Arteta.

The Cottagers are seventh in the Premier League standings and Willian has played 14 games, scoring twice and setting up three.

And Arsenal legend Wright has admitted that he thought leaving North London was the end of Willian as a player.

He told The Wrighty’s House podcast: “Willian’s got to get some [flowers]. We thought it was over. Willian! It’s like ‘listen man, I’m coming back. That wasn’t the best concert I can do.’ I’m delighted for him.”

Not only is he 34, but his Arsenal career probably made him never want to return to the Premier League as a professional footballer.

And yet the man himself is proving that there’s life in the old dog just yet.

Of course, Arsenal were hardly wrong to let him go, given that Arteta’s side are top of the Premier League standings, but it would appear as if he isn’t the busted flush that he appeared during that year in North London.
