Former Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has confirmed that he is now a free agent and could stay in the Premier League amid reported interest from Everton, speaking on Instagram, via TMW

At the age of 34, it is difficult to dispel the notion that the veteran shot-stopper has seen one of his final few years at the top level of European football slip away.

Romero was desperate to leave Manchester United in the summer of 2020.

But after the Red Devils refused to budge on their £10 million asking price – a fee no one was going to pay for a goalkeeper in his mid-30s, the Argentine international was forced to stay put and spend the entire season twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines.

With Romero’s contract expiring, however, the long-standing Everton target is now free to bring an end to his personal nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams – and not a moment too soon.

Will Marcel Brands bring Sergio Romero to Everton?

The Mail reported in April that Everton are hoping to reunite Marcel Brands with a player he signed during his time at AZ Alkmaar in 2007.

“I was let go by United and we are working to see where to play,” Romero said over the weekend when asked about his next move. “Thank God I have several offers in Europe.

“United told me I was a free agent. The clubs that have requested me are all in Europe, let’s see which is the best option, if it is England or Italy, we’ll see.

“And if it is Spain, it will be a new experience. But I also have to think about my daughters, who are already grown up.”

ESPN reported in July 2020 that Romero was also a shock target for Manchester United’s bitter rivals Leeds. Aston Villa were also keen.

And, with Kiko Casilla and Tom Heaton both expected to make their goodbyes before long, Romero’s new-found availability is unlikely to go unnoticed at Elland Road or Villa Park.
