Sergio Romero’s £70,000-a-week wages could prevent the Manchester United goalkeeper joining Premier League rivals Aston Villa during the summer transfer window, according to The Sun (3 September, page 51).
The Midlands giants have signed a new shot-stopper in each of the past four transfer windows and that trend looks set to continue before the early October deadline.
With Lovre Kalinic, Orjan Nyland and Jed Steer all facing uncertain futures at Villa Park, Pepe Reina gone and Tom Heaton still on the sidelines, Dean Smith wants yet another ‘number one’.
And with veteran Romero falling to third in the pecking order at Old Trafford following Dean Henderson’s return, The Sun suggests Aston Villa could offer the 96-time Argentina international a fresh start.
The Manchester Evening News adds Romero’s representatives are trying to find a buyer before the 33-year-old is consigned to six months on the sidelines.

The former Sampdoria glovesman has made just seven Premier League appearances in five years at United but his experience, composure and communication means his signing would be a real coup for an Aston Villa side that only avoided relegation in the final few minutes of 2019/20.
All signs suggest, however, Romero may be forced to take a wage cut if he wants to join Smith’s side.
The 2017 Europa League winner currently earns £70,000 a week, more than anyone at Aston Villa (Spotrac).
