James Maxwell believes he made the right decision turning down a new contract at Rangers in order to embark on a new adventure at Doncaster Rovers, speaking to the Doncaster Free Press.
The Scotland U19 international has not missed a single minute of action since moving south of the border, completing the full 90 in every one of Doncaster’s first three games in 2022/23.
It’s certainly hard to imagine Maxwell featuring with such regularity at Ibrox.
The 20-year-old left-back turned down the chance to extend his contract in Rangers due to his desire to play first-team football, week-in, week-out.
And that decision might already have been justified. Maxwell has immediately established himself as a key part of the Doncaster squad.
Why did James Maxwell leave Rangers for Doncaster Rovers
“(Leaving Rangers) wasn’t really a decision over a month or two. It was over a longer period of time,” says Maxwell.
“When it came to rejecting (the contract offer), I was pretty clear in my mind in terms of going all in on myself and believing in myself; Not being afraid of being a free agent for a couple of months and the uncertainty that comes with that.
“I was pretty OK with it.”
Maxwell was reportedly a target for Leeds United earlier in the year, per the Daily Mail. But with regular minutes top of the talented full-back’s agenda, a Doncaster side plying their trade in the fourth-tier of English football found themselves in a rather unique situation where they had an advantage over clubs far higher up the footballing pyramid.
“I have still got a good relationship with a lot of people that work there (at Rangers). They understood my reasons for wanting to move on,” Maxwell adds.
“You never know what football is going to chuck at you. But when (Doncaster) came up, I wanted to do it.”
