Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna believes that Mikel Arteta is the right man to restore the club to its former glory.

Speaking to Football London, the ex-Emirates Stadium hero voiced his backing for his former teammate. Arsenal have started the Premier League season poorly, with the Gunners losing their opening three fixtures.

The pressure is mounting for Arteta to deliver, especially with the Basque manager spending the most out of any club in Europe this summer on six first-team signings.

Indeed, the next few Premier League games will be crucial to Arteta’s future at Arsenal. There is a belief that failure to win the next fixtures against Norwich City, Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur could result in the young coach being sacked.

Yet Sagna is confident in Arteta. The former French international said: “There is a lot to be done. I really think that the international break came at the right moment for them to get some fresh air and start from zero.

The ex-defender added with: “I believe he is still important for Arsenal football club.

“He has a vision, of course it takes time to build that team. Whether we like it or not we’re going to have to deal with it as fans, because I’m a fan now, and we have to be patient.”

Time will tell if Arsenal are making the right decision sticking with Arteta. And with the Norwich game coming up soon, supporters will be hoping for a big response with the likes of Thomas Partey and Gabriel returning to the first-team picture from injury.
