Michael Owen has stated that he knows Steven Gerrard is ‘very happy with his Aston Villa squad and how he has been backed in the transfer market, as he told Premier League Productions (31/08/22 at 10:50 pm).

Aston Villa suffered a fourth defeat in five Premier League games on Wednesday night and Owen urged Villa to let Gerrard ‘do his business’ because he thinks there are ‘calmer waters ahead’.

Well, the next wave coming at Villa is going to be the Premier League champions, Manchester City, and a certain Erling Haaland, who has scored back-to-back hat-tricks.

There is serious pressure on Gerrard and the former Rangers boss knows full well what could be coming his way at the weekend.

It’s transfer deadline day and Villa are hoping to conclude a few deals, or so they hope, but when Owen spoke about Gerrard, to no one’s surprise, he backed his former teammate.

“They have spent a lot of money,” said Owen. “I know Steven (Gerrard) has been reasonably happy or very happy with his squad and the club have always backed him in the transfer market as well.

“At the start of the season, you don’t get off to a great start after four or five games, then the knives are out. Let’s just relax a little bit.

“It’s easy me saying that sat in this chair when a set of supporters and the chairman, who are watching their team getting beat, and all those hopes and dreams are almost dashed before their eyes.

“It’s not like that. They have some good players and it has been a tough start to the season. Going to Arsenal, now it’s Manchester City, there will be calmer waters ahead.

“He’s a young manager. He is learning. And he will be a very good manager in the future, if he isn’t already, so just a little bit of patience. I think it will be wise for everyone to keep a cool head and let him do his business.”

WHO WILL ASTON VILLA SIGN ON DEADLINE DAY?

It seems as though Villa are close to sealing the transfer of Leander Dendoncker from Wolves, but what does that mean for Douglas Luiz’s future?

The possible Dendoncker signing isn’t going to see Villa fans jumping up and down, but if they lose Luiz then that would be an even bigger blow.

A number of clubs are circulating to sign the player on transfer deadline day – he has one-year left on his deal – so, could Arsenal land his signature?

If they do, then it would be ironic that one of his last pieces of action for Villa was scoring directly from a corner against the Gunners last night.
