Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that Arsenal fans are ‘absolutely furious’ that Granit Xhaka was handed the captain’s armband once again after that infamous moment against Crystal Palace.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being absent for Arsenal’s defeat to Brentford last Friday, it was Xhaka who led the club out against the newly-promoted side.

Not so long ago, it seemed like Xhaka was heading for the exit door this summer, but now it seems like he will be signing a new contract.

That perhaps sums up where Arsenal are at and how they are going from one end of the extreme to the other in next to no time.

But given Xhaka’s past with the Arsenal captaincy, Sutton shared what fans have told him about him wearing that armband again.

“Why was he given the captaincy,” asked Sutton. “I know a couple of Arsenal fans that are absolutely furious that he was captain.”

If Aubameyang continues to be out of action for Arsenal then Xhaka will probably lead the North London club once again at the weekend.

But this time a more difficult task faces Arteta and his players because it’s a showdown against the European champions.

Chelsea beat Arsenal during a pre-season friendly recently and with Romelu Lukaku in line to make his second debut for Thomas Tuchel’s side, things have just become tougher for Arteta and Co.
