Perry Groves has backed Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United to sign Fulham defender Antonee Robinson who has a ‘very unusual’ quality.

Eddie Howe’s side are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season and it has been suggested that Antonee Robinson is on Newcastle United’s radar.

Former Arsenal man Groves claimed that the American left-back is ‘very good one-v-one’ and he feels that is unique in the modern game, as he told talkSPORT

As of this moment, Dan Burn is the Magpies’ bonafide left-sided fullback, with Matt Targett as the back-up.

But it seems as though Howe wants to upgrade that spot this summer, with AC Milan star Theo Hernandez another name mentioned.

When Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath spoke about Newcastle’s interest in Robinson this summer, Groves lauded the 25-year-old.

“Antonee Robinson, as a fullback, I am sure Newcastle and others would look at him because he’s very much under-the-radar, in terms of highlights and being on Match of the Day,” said McGrath.

“He’s very good one-v-one,” responded Groves. “It’s very unusual these days, where you get your wing-backs and they are flying forward.

“He is excellent when he has got a winger to mark. I haven’t seen anyone get the better of him this season.”

Robinson would be a smart purchase

Ever since the Saudis took charge of Newcastle, those from the outside thought they would go money-crazy in the transfer market.

But it has been far from it, as the likes of Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope can vouch.

A player like Robinson is ready for that step up and he is showcasing the ability that he is perhaps too good to play at left-back because of how he motors up and down that flank.

Either way, this is something the Magpies should push for because it could prove to be another smart purchase.
