Ian Wright has criticised how Everton are being run and stated ‘I haven’t heard anything’ from owner Farhad Moshiri for a long time as pressure mounts on Frank Lampard.
The boos could be heard across Merseyside on Tuesday night when Everton were trashed and humiliated by Brighton at Goodison Park, with Wright stating that it was ‘very easy’ to play against the Toffees.
Everton have been in many sticky situations since Moshiri bought a majority stake in the club in 2016.
Millions upon millions have been spent by Everton, yet rather than move forward, it has put the club in a heap of mess, financial trouble and having to face yet another relegation battle.
After 18 Premier League games, they are sitting in the drop zone, and whilst only two points separate them and 13th-placed Leicester City, those relegation worries are starting to bubble up again.
From Southampton to newly-promoted Bournemouth, there are many abject teams down the bottom, Everton’s problem is that they are as bad as those, as Wright spoke on the matter to Premier League Productions (03/01/23 at 10:40 pm).
“It looks very easy,” said Wright. “They seem second to everything. They look all over the place. There doesn’t seem to be anyone closing people down – it looks like a team struggling to do what their manager wants them to do. They don’t seem to be anywhere near what they are doing.
“The way they have been sacking their managers. You feel like it’s coming from the same place. What are they going to do? What more can they do? It’s the same people upstairs.
“I think it was built on sand. They got all the money, but they have no foundation. The academy, what’s going on? What’s happening with the stadium? You don’t know what’s going on with everything that is going on.
“I haven’t heard anything from Moshiri for a long time now. You don’t know what’s going on there. Everything seems to be up in the air, then Frank’s trying to get the team going and he’s trying to get them together. The confidence is low. It looks like it’s going nowhere fast.”
WHAT NEXT FOR EVERTON?
12 months ago, those same groans, frustrations and voices of anger were being heard inside Goodison Park when Rafa Benitez was in charge.
The club decided to back him early on in the winter window, including letting him sell Lucas Digne to Aston Villa after a falling out, only to sack him later on that month.
The same can’t happen again. Either Everton back Lampard this month and stick with him even if the troubles continue beyond January.
Or they have no trust in him, bring in a new face and then back that manager with the January transfer window still in its early stages.
