Ian Wright says he ‘doesn’t understand’ why Harry Kane would want to sign a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur, as he told the Kelly and Wrighty Show (23/01/23 at 2:55 pm).

The Premier League legend questioned if this is a ‘signal’ from Kane to interested parties that, if they want to sign him, then come now, otherwise, he questioned why he would risk the chance of not winning a trophy or trophies in his career.

The 29-year-old has less than 18 months left on his contract and surprise rumours emerged on Monday that he is ‘open’ to discussing a new deal at Hotspur Way.

Daniel Levy has had two trophy-laden coaches in the dugout ever since Mauricio Pochettino was sacked, including current manager, Antonio Conte.

But that all-important trophy has still alluded the club and Kane himself, with rumours that Conte himself will be gone in the summer.

Therefore, it has to be questioned why Kane would be so willing to stay on at Spurs, especially given his previously well-documented desire to join Manchester City, which Erling Haaland is now profiting from.

“No, I didn’t (see it coming) because I think he has a year left or something?!” said Wright. “Does it come out from his side? I think so.

“Unless it’s a signal. It’s a signal to people like if you are coming then this is the time – he’s at that age, though. He’s at that delicate age. If it was a year left and he was 27, then I don’t think there is any way he signs a new deal or he puts it out there that he is ready to sign a new deal.

“Harry Kane coming to the end of his contract at 28, I am buying that. I am buying that all day long. If I can get him for free, then even more so. I still think Harry can score goals for anyone at an alarming rate. No danger.

“When you look at him, I just think to myself, him signing at Tottenham that means he has resigned himself to maybe not winning anything. That’s what I can’t understand. That is more than anything else when I sit down and think about it. ‘I am so pleased I won the Premier League’ – I speak to Alan Shearer all the time and he says ‘I am so pleased I won that’.

“If he is happy with that (getting the goalscoring records), then fine. He is going to have to deal with people coming up to him every day and saying ‘well, you didn’t win anything’, that’s fine if he can deal with that. But somebody who has scored goals at the highest level, at that rate, should have a lot more to show for it. That’s why I feel for him.”

KANE SHOULD LEAVE

The England captain walks into any top club in Europe today, and if he leaves Spurs in the summer, then within a few seasons, he could have a number of medals around his neck.

It’s not like he’s not tried or stayed with Spurs during his goal-crazy moments. Not only that, have the club met his expectations? That’s a big no.

Levy has had one of the world’s best on his doorstep for nearly a decade, yet, he’s not pushed the boat out for a one-in-a-generation player and that’s something fans will never forgive him for.

Spurs fans want their chairman out of the door, alongside owner Joe Lewis, and the quicker they leave, the better it is for the club.
