Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Chris Sutton has been reacting to a comparison made between this Liverpool team and Arsenal’s Invincibles of 2003/04.

For many, Arsenal’s 2004 side is the greatest team in English football history, and it’s not hard to understand why some people think that. After all, they didn’t lose a single league game that season.

However, the BBC’s Mark Chapman pointed out that Liverpool have in fact lost fewer games than Arsenal this season despite having deeper runs in the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League.

This was a valid point to make, but Sutton wasn’t having any of it, stating that it wasn’t an apt comparison.

What’s been said?

Chapman and Sutton had a discussion about this Liverpool team and Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side.

“They’ve lost just three of their sixty games across all competitions, one of those was the second-leg of the Inter Champions League tie. To put that into some context and probably annoying any Arsenal fan, Wenger’s invincibles lost six times in all competitions,” Chapman said.

“I can’t believe you have brought that up. You’re saying that they weren’t Invincible then?” Sutton responded.

“I’m not, I’m just pointing out that this runs across all competitions, that’s all I’m saying. One of the games Wenger’s team lost was the community shield, so you can take that with a pinch of salt, but that consistency is astonishing,” Chapman said.

The better team?

Sutton seemed to be taken aback by the idea of Liverpool being compared to that Arsenal team, but in all honesty, there’s a case to be made that this Jurgen Klopp side is better than the Invincibles.

Yes, they have lost games in the Premier League this season, but they have a great chance of surpassing Arsenal’s points tally of 90, and they will could well win a quadruple.

Failing a quadruple win, a treble is still very much on, and that would surely surpass the achievements of an Arsenal team that only won one trophy, albeit in spectacular fashion, in 2004.

Perhaps Sutton should be more open to this argument.
